* What if seedlings start stretching in March-April?
If seedlings developed normally but started to become leggy by the end of April, there are usually two reasons. Even though the sun shines longer, indoor lighting is often insufficient for mature plants, and high temperatures exacerbate the issue. Temperature control is crucial during this period.
The simplest method is regular ventilation. Peppers, tomatoes, cabbage, and onions tolerate light drafts well (unlike pumpkin crops, which must be protected). By April, plants are also large enough to shade each other.
4 steps to prevent thin, crooked seedlings:
1. Spacing. Move pots further apart. Plants should be positioned so their leaves do not touch.
2. Re-potting. If growing in boxes, transplant into individual pots. If in pots, move them to larger containers. This encourages root growth and temporarily slows down stem elongation.
3. Pruning. You can trim 1–2 lower leaves. This eliminates shading and forces the plant to focus on recovery rather than vertical growth.
4. Watering. Simultaneously reduce watering slightly (without letting plants wilt), to slow down vegetative growth.

Did you know that... fresh peppers retain their nutritional value for a long time only if stored correctly. Before storing, sort them and remove any damaged ones. The best way to store pepper is in a basket suspended in a ventilated place. Incidentally, tomatoes and eggplants should be stored in the same way.
